Co-creating technologies with patient groups, charities, healthcare professionals & Industry

An EPSRC-Funded project aimed at developing transformative deep ultraviolet light therapies

u-Care Vision

Bring together a world leading team of engineers, physicists, biologists, and clinician scientists.

Technology

Cutting-edge new healthcare technologies based on the unique properties of deep ultraviolet light.

Impact

Accelerate the use of deep UV light for healthcare applications.

About u-Care

u-Care is a multidisciplinary project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

The project was awarded £6.1M of funding in 2020 through EPSRC’s “Transformative Healthcare Technologies for 2050” call, and officially started on the 1st of January 2021.

u-Care will exploit cutting-edge techniques in laser physics to develop new sources of deep UV light which are compact and robust. We will develop ways to precisely deliver this light for new therapies that target some of the biggest challenges facing medicine: cellular-precision cancer surgery, and the emergence of drug-resistant “super-bugs”.

Technology

u-Care will involve engineers and physical scientists working in close collaboration with clinicians and biomedical scientists to verify that the therapies we develop are effective and safe.

Clinical Pull

Through u-Care, we aim to develop advanced deep UV light sources and other enabling technologies, and so create transformative deep UV light therapies.
